Fillers can improve the look of your skin by plumping the dermis and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. They are a great alternative to more invasive procedures, such as facelift or neck lift surgery.
These temporary solutions restore or create natural-looking volume in the cheeks, lips, chin, temples, and around the mouth.
Am I a Candidate for Dermal Fillers?
If you have fine to medium lines on your face and are in good overall health, then fillers are an excellent option. They are also appropriate for those who wish to push off the need for surgical enhancement. Filler injections stimulate your body to increase collagen production, which means that, over time, you will need less filler.
You have many options for dermal fillers, depending on the results you want and where you have lines and wrinkles.
Restylane®, JUVÉDERM®, and BELOTERO BALANCE® are fillers that contain hyaluronic acid (HA), which naturally occurs in the body. These fillers can be injected in the cheeks, lips, around the mouth, below the nose, between the eyes, and in the temples.
RADIESSE® is the longest-lasting filler, with effects that last up to 2 years. It contains calcium hydroxylapatite, which stimulates collagen production in the body and gives the fullest results.
How Is the Dermal Filler Procedure Performed?
The actual process of injecting fillers can take as little as 15 minutes—and rarely more than an hour—so they are ideal treatments to have administered on your lunch break.
First, your provider will mark areas that need attention. To reduce pain, the injection site may be numbed with a local anesthetic (although many fillers contain lidocaine in their makeup to alleviate pain), or the skin may be chilled with a cold instrument. While not entirely pain-free, many patients report little discomfort.
Next, the fillers are injected at each marked site, and the surrounding area is massaged to ensure that the filler is distributed correctly. Once the procedure is completed, all the markings are washed off, and your skin lightly rubbed. You may receive an ice pack to reduce discomfort, and you can take over-the-counter painkillers to reduce swelling and pain.
What Is the Filler Recovery Like?
Fillers are non-surgical injectables. Therefore, they do not require downtime. Many people start to notice their results soon after the injection, although it may take a few weeks for the final results to be apparent. If you feel sore or have swelling, you can apply cold compresses to your face and take a day off to rest.
What Results Can I Expect From Fillers?
Results from fillers vary by individual. Most people notice the elimination of fine lines and a noticeable reduction medium to deep wrinkles and sunken features.
While fillers provide noticeable enhancement, they are not permanent. Regardless of the ingredients, your body will eventually absorb the fillers, requiring additional touch-up treatments. Fillers last anywhere from six months to two years, depending on the type of filler and the body’s ability to metabolize it.
Repeated injections can be performed as necessary.
What Treatments Can Be Combined With My Fillers?
For some patients, improving facial volume is all that they desire. For others, additional non-surgical treatments can enhance results even further by promoting facial balance or more even skin tone and texture.
Some dermal filler patients choose to combine their filler injections with:
- BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles around the eyes and forehead.
- Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling, to promote natural collagen production and smooth out additional fine lines, wrinkles, and facial scars.
- Radiofrequency (RF) facial contouring, to tighten loose or sagging skin on the face.
- Cynosure® Icon™ laser resurfacing, to even out skin tone by eliminating pigmentation concerns.
